VICTIM OVERVIEW:
Shelbey Jean Thornburgh was born on August 18th, 1995 in Decatur, Texas. Shelbey had a rough childhood, growing up in foster care and eventually finding herself in sex work to make a living and save up for an upcoming tummy tuck. According to her sister Krystina, she had told the family she had gotten a high paying job, but not in sex work. At the time of her death, Shelbey was 20 years old living in the 7500 block of Bellaire Boulevard in Houston, Texas. She was working for/dating a pimp named Marcus Dewayne Johnson, AKA Marc Dee, who has been cleared in any involvement in her death. He was also the one to find Shelbey, and call the police.
SUSPECT OVERVIEW:
The suspect was captured on CCTV entering and leaving her apartment building. He is described as a white male in his 30's-40's, wearing a light colored long sleeve shirt, shorts, tennis shoes, and sunglasses. The suspect had activated the cell phone used to communicate with the victim only 12 days before the murders, never used the phone in a stationary location, and deactivated it the day after. It is believed he could have potential law enforcement, military, or medical training based on how she was killed. His DNA was found and collected at the scene, but does not match anyone in the CODIS database. Two strands of hair believing to belong to the suspect were collected as well. Authorities believe this suspect is likely a serial killer, and not local to the area. They believe he may have ties to Dallas and Louisiana. It is said that authorities are "attempting to get clearance to run DNA through genetic genealogy." Unsure when or if that is happening, let alone the results.
TIMELINE:
8:33PM- Suspect arrives and texts Shelbey "I'm here" and is seen on CCTV arriving.
8:40PM- Shelbey texts Marcus saying "Gud" indicating she was okay and received the payment.
8:46PM- Suspect was seen leaving the apartment building
10:00PM- After being unable to reach Shelbey, Marcus enetered her apartment to find her dead, and called the police saying "somebody killed my girl"
EXCERPT FROM AUTOPSY REPORT:
An incised wound of the anterior neck. A large gaping incised wound extends horizontally across the anterior neck. The wound measures five and one half inches in length and is located nine and one half inches below the top of the head and two inches to the right of the anterior midline. The margins of the wound are sharp with no ragged edges or serrations. No tissue bridging is observed. A one inch linear abrasion extends from the lower left margin of the wound traversing obliquely from the 10 o'clock to four o'clock. A three quarter inch linear abrasion extends from the upper right margin of the wound obliquely from four to 10 o'clock. A one quarter inch linear abrasion extends obliquely from the upper mid point skin margin of the wound from four o'clock to 10 o'clock. A subsequent internal examination of the neck reveals that the wound tract incises the clavicular head of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle and transects the sternal head of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle, incises the left jugular vein, punctures the left carotid artery, transects the bilaterals sternothyroid and sternohyoid muscles, the trachea and the esophagus, transects the right sternocleidomastoid and omohyoid muscles and transects the right vertebral artery, right carotid artery, and right jugular vein. At least four sharp injury paths extend through the soft tissue and on the C3 through C5 vertebral bodies. The approximate depth of the injury is two and one half inches and the ends are sharp. The hyoid bone and larynx, the mid portion of the trachea and esophagus and the anterior cervical spine from C3 to C5 are removed and submitted for anthropologic consultation.
